That looks like rubbing up against a fence to me.. Or at least a fence post.
Regularally spaced scratches on the corner.. Not easy to do by hand and no tool I know has that tine spacing. But it's about right for the "Staples" (Wire ties) on a chain link or woven wire fence.
Ya, could be. But, a fence post is straight up and down. There are also scratches by the tail lights in the indented section. Did he hit the fence post so hard that it broke off and the top of the post hit by the tail lights because the rest of the fence was holding it and the broken post tilted???
We have to know. Drive back, re trace your steps and see what you can find. But, watch out for cops and pissed off farmers that are mad at you for breaking there post. (jk, kinda)
