Our 2013 Edge is serving us well but what pickups can be flat towed? It would fill two needs with one vehicle.
What about weights?

I bought a 2005 Ford ranger edge to tow. I called Ford customer service with the VIN number before I bought it and the guy on the other end of the phone read me the build sheet and told me it weighed 3471 when it left the factory without a hitch, tow hooks, etc. Anything the dealer or owner added would add to the base weight.

I tow it at 60 even though the owner's manual says maximum 55. I carry a 300lb motorcycle in the bed and have a rack to carry a 16ft canoe on the roof and over the top of the motorcycle. All up weight with a full tank of gas is right at 4000 pounds.

Special requirements for towing are:
Turn key to 1st position to unlock steering
Put transmission in neutral
Remove parking brake

I know it sounds stupidly simple but I have seen videos on YouTube where folks have forgot one of the three steps. Fingers crossed, it hasn't happened to me yet.

I towed a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge, short bed regular cab, for about six years. The first owner bought it for towing, so I got it used with a custom baseplate and A-frame towbar.

2WD, 3.0 V-6, regular cab, manual transmission, it was just over 3500 pounds empty. It could carry at least 800 pounds. Super cabs, higher trim levels, will add to the empty weight and cut into carrying capacity. Because mine was manual transmission, it was rated to tow almost nothing (something under 4000, like a minivan). But I bought it to be towed, not to tow.

I replaced it as a towed vehicle with a manual transmission Honda Fit, at least 800 pounds lighter, twice the MPG. I replaced it as a load carrying truck with a E-350 van, 3000 pounds carrying capacity, major gas hog (well, not really, 15 MPG vs 20 for the Ranger, around town).

It much depends on what are your pickup needs. A pickup that can carry 2000+ pounds and tow more than 6000 is going to be something like 5000-6000 pounds empty. If you need 5-6 seats, then you will have that weight with a diminished capacity for what you can carry in the bed. Cab configuration, trim levels, options have a big effect on weight of pickups. At full size "1/2 ton" there is usually 1000 pounds difference between empty weight of lightest "work truck" model vs. family limousine pickup with all the luxury and tech.

down home,
Well, in short, GM, and Dodge, in their 1/2 ton version 4x4, have been flat towable for years and years. Ford, in its infinite wisdom, did not allow its 1/2 ton 4x4 to be flat towed, all the way through the year model 2011. Then, in the year 2012, one of Fords genious's decided "hey, all the other guys have been doing it so, why don't we?"

After that, Fords are now flat towable. As far as the Ford Ranger, that's a bit on the semi-complicated seen too. That is, what's needed in the Ford Ranger 4x4 to be flat towed is called an NTK or, Neutral Tow Kit. You can enquire at your local Ford dealer as to the availability of it. And, not all year models of Ranger accept the NTK kit so, that too will require a bit of investigation if you plan on one of those.

We've been towing a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 Extended Cab for about 3 years now and, it's worked out just great. No special applications, no charge wire to keep the battery from draining, no fuses to be pulled and, unlike the 2013 and newer model of the GMC and Chevy, we don't have to pull the negative battery cable each and every time we hook up to tow.

Our truck, with a full tank of fuel, is right at 5,300 lbs. I know 'cause I took it over and weighed it. Our coach is an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT and, it does quite well with that GMC behind it. No issues what so ever.

The GMC Canyon and, the Chevy Colorado 4x4 units are also flat towable. No idea what they weigh. And, while the Dinghy towing guide, put out by Motorhome magazine does supply weights of the vehicles that can be flat towed, I've proved the wrong twice and they were pretty far off. So, if you're concerned about weight, and have a certain model in mind, don't he lazy and go get it weighed so you'll know for sure what you're dealing with.

ALMOST all 4X4 pickups that have (or can be programmed for) a Neutral position in the transfer case shift.
SOME (but not all) 4X2 models can be flat towed. As always, the Owners Manual is the final authority. If it says "YES", then follow the instructions. If it says "NO" and you do it anyway based on anecdotal evidence found on an internet forum, the cost of any failure will come out of YOUR pocket!
Good luck.

Nissan Frontier, Manual Transmission Only, about 4000.

The GM Twins S10/Sonoma, whatever they call the newly released version, with electronic 4x4. My guess is weight's about the same.

REMCO towing offers an easy link to MOHO Magazine's Towing Guide. Easy way to get to the Guide. Still, I'd take Owner's Manual (not MOHO or REMCO) as final authority.

For getting Ford's 4x4 into Neutral (that TC Neutral Kit), there's a web article about fabbing your own. The key to it is the Dealer going in to flash the ECM to kick the TC into Neutral. The part of the "Kit" you can see is an LED to show you visually that the process actually took place, a few Radio Shack items. Concerning specific Ford models, yes, a competent dealer would have to be able to tell you the ECM process was available for the specific truck you want to apply it to.

Only one I have personal experience with:

2011 Ford Ranger. Automatic, 4 WD. V-6. XLT. Extended cab. Gotta buy the "Transfer Case Neutral Kit"...a "Ford Only" item....400 bucks, installed. They re-program one of the computers, and give you a orange LED light to show it is active or not. I can give you the Ford part number....PM me. However, different part numbers for different vehicles.
And...it tows very well. 4000 pounds.
