Previous generations? The previous generations paid for most of what they consumed in the form of higher taxes and less government services and benefits. The national debt was 653 billion dollars ($2,997 per capita) in 1976 and today stands at $17.283 trillion dollars ($54,500 per capita.) OUR generation is the one that managed to rack up an obscene debt of $16.63 trillion dollars in just 37 years. Our children and grand children will be the ones saddled with the bill when it comes due and payable. They will be the ones paying higher taxes and receiving less benefits for those tax dollars, not us.
I tried to send you a PM, but you aren't set up to receive them.
Here's basically what I sent:
Hey,
I thought I'd do you the courtesy of sending a PM. I'm only 30, so "the previous generations" was broad sweeping.
Anyway, I pulled my post down and decided to avoid the angst and vitriol that I was helping to stir up. It makes my hands hurt to just thinking of the typing I was inadvertently signing up for to continue the debate.
Also, I made some broad statements that won't be equally interpreted here because the forum has people from their 20s to their 90s - from every demographic, geography, background, etc.. I started frm a relative perspective. It'd be hard to get consensus on even simple points without time to really unpack terms, definitions, etc. A great coffee shop or pub discussion, but not one for me to have on this forum.
Hope you are well! Thanks for your reply, and I do appreciate that your tone was polite and productive, unlike many others that finally got me riled up enough to jump in.
This is me jumping back out.
Many blessings,
