why do people huddle?

Just a question.... Or maybe a rant! Lol...

We are in Palm Springs and because of the heat the campground is near empty. MANY empty sites! I am in a park where you drive around and pick your own site. Not assigned. I am in a site about 4 up from the end. There are 15 sites past me. I am here for 3 weeks. For some reason people keep pulling in RIGHT next to us. The sites that are all empty are all the same but within a day of someone leaving, here comes someone else crowding in next to us with empty sites all around (both sides)! What is with that? Someone suggested it is the "wagon train" mentality. I think people are just so darn used to living on top of each other in the city. What do you think?

If you will all re-read the original post, the OP is asking "Why"? I think he wanted to get some replies from those that actually would park right next to someone when there are a ton of other, same quality sites available. He was just curious as to "Why" they do it. Just a thought..... ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. It was just a matter of time before the bomb throwers would arrive. So this thread doesn't degrade I am out with much appreciation.
God bless,

Had you read the original and subsequent messages you would have seen that this is a park that you pick your own site. You do NOT reserve a particular site. Seems since you didn't even care to notice the reason for the thread I would question who is self-centered here. I really appreciate the constructive responsives here. For the 2 pot stirrers, enjoy and God bless!

Actually, I don't camp right next to others if I can camp away from them. I enjoy camping this time of the year because I can get a secluded site. That being said, if someone wants to take the site next to me, I'm fine with it. It's perfectly within their rights to do do. If they're noisy or their dog barks all the time or if their kids trample through my site, I'll move to another one. Otherwise , I'll invite them over for a beer by the fire. Friendly neighbors is one of the positive aspects of camping.

But it seems to me if the campground is near empty the "Friendly" neighbors would leave a spot between rigs. I guess everyone gets it here but you so that's pretty good. Actually I was not trying to convince anyone, just trying to understand the psychology of it. I think that has pretty much been accomplished.
We have made good friends at this campground (as we do at most). ๐Ÿ™‚

Brian, I'm sorry, but I just don't think there is anything to get or not get. Did you read my post? I said that I do not camp right next to others if there are a number of sites available where I'm not right on top of someone. That being said, the other campers paid the same thing I did, so they are entitled to pick whatever spot they want as long as there's no one already in it. Life is waaayyyy too short to get your panties in a bunch because someone chose the site next to yours. Man, if you rant about this,I'd not want to imagine what your reaction would be if something bad really did happen!

So next time someone picks the site next to you, why don't you walk around your site ranting and grumbling and maybe they'll leave. Or, maybe they'll hang around for the entertainment!

Look for deactivated Claymore mines. Point the side that says
"THIS SIDE TOWARDS THE ENEMY" in appropriate positions in several adjacent sites around you.

Sometimes with the neighbors I get, I would rather get ones that are still active!

But If I used the urinal next to you instead of one further down the line, would you take the time to rant about it?

The real solution would be, if you absolutely don't want someone right next to you, would be to pay for three sites and set some stuff in the other sites(that you paid for) so you have your privacy.

_---------------------

But I think you missed the whole point of this entire thread! Never said I absolutely don't want anyone next to me. Just trying to figure out why someone would go next to you when there are sooo many other sites that are equally as good or bad that are not next to anyone. I get it, you go right next to people. Please explain why.

Thanks,
Brian

The wagon train reference is a start. They phenomenon is really related to the rear part of what is pulling the wagon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boondocking for me.

Instinct for safety and community for prosperity.

Watch a flock of animals... those on the edge or by themselves are more likely to meet their fate.

Specialization gives groups advantages of trade. So more wealth is created in cities.

Of course if we think about it this should not apply to choosing an RV spot. I speculate most don't think too much about it so they form groups just on instinct.

BTW... free beer helps also (see trade above).

You would have to find a place in your rv for the tuba! We need something that is easier to store. How about a big sign, "Beware of pit bull."

Another option would be 20 or 30 empty beer cans and an old shotgun laying on the picnic table.
It would take up less space than a tuba. ๐Ÿ™‚

The older post on this subject mentioned above really got folks riled up and attacked the OP. So far, everyone's been nice to you. Amazing!

We agree, this has happened to us also - especially out in the boonies of a national forest all by ourselves and someone plops down near us. Argh!!
