On my way to another campground i picked up a nail in my brand new duravis r250 tire on the 5ver, had a company come out and they put a plug in the hole which was not in the sidewall but between the tread and they thought it was good to go. my question is should i go ahead and travel or use this tire as my spare?

if your spare is as good or better than that tire in terms of age and tread then sure, make the switch. but a properly repaired tire should provide you with the same service as an tire that has never been repaired.

In my experience, plugging a tire in the tread area is ok, but never in the sidewall.

I carry a kit and plug my own tires when on the road. I do dismount and patch from the inside when I get home.

having been a tire buster back in the day, a patch was always considered a much better solution than plugging it.unless some new technology has come around, i would only consider a plug to be a temporary fix until i could get the tire into a shop to have it patched on the inside.

I would stop at next chance and have it patched and plugged from the inside. In the meanwhile keep a close eye on your TPMS.

I carry a 125 lb pressure air canister. makes quick work of any flat.

Get it patched with an umbrella patch/plug and never worry again. Do not know of any tire shops up here that use plugs anymore.

No! Use the spare and take it to be patched/plugged from the inside.

Have had plugs in tires and never had a problem. My father would rather have a tire plugged than patched. But he comes from the old school. Lol

Rubber Manufacturers Association on correct repair of passenger and light truck tires.

And they say "a plug by itself is an unacceptable repair". "A rubber stem, or plug, must be applied to fill the puncture injury and a patch must be applied to seal the inner liner."

I think it depends on the nature of the puncture. For a simple nail hole, the plug should do fine, and -- in my experience -- be permanent. Any irregularity in the puncture, however, will most likely require a patch. I've had slow leaks using plugs when the holes were even slightly irregular.

If you didn't run it soft the tire is good to go with a plug in the tread.

Had my toad tire plugged on the road and when I got back I had them go and patch it also from the inside just to make sure. They were brand new tires. Been 2 years and a ton of miles being towed and it still holds air!

A plug is a temporary fix, it should be patched from the inside. With all the talk of cheap Chinese tires and blowouts I would swap it for the spare. Why take a chance. But that's what I would do.
