Yet another tire question

Thought I have read a similar post as this, but couldn't find it to refresh my recollection.

Just picked up 4 new tires. Was kind of surprised to see the manufacture date as the 32nd week of '17 (so the tire is already 9 months old). Questioned the store manager, who said that was normal (he said he has seen some that are well over a year old when sold new - referenced winter tires that are manufactured once a year and often don't get sold until the following winter, as an example).

As I have read that a tire ages, regardless of whether it is rolling down the road or sitting in a driveway, I was wondering if this is also true of warehouse stored tires and if the life of these are now shorter than if they were brand brand-new. Or am I wondering about something of no real significance.

Due to circumstance, had to accept the tires.

  • Better things to concern yourself with... This is not an issue.
  • Wouldn’t worry about 9months old. With that said, last tires I put on 5th wheel we’re a planned replacement that shop had to order, I told them they needed to be <6months old and they didn’t have a problem with that...they did have a couple weeks to get them in though.
  • There are some excellent resources available from the tire companies and other other tire industry experts on the internet. Doing a search for tire shelf life will help you find credible information.
  • The freshest tires I can remember purchasing were 2 months old. I would not be concerned about getting 9 month old tires. I would refuse tires that are 2 years old.

  • We bought our TT new in March 2013. When started looking into replacing the tires recently , I found the factory tires had mid to late 2011 date codes on them.
  • I certainly wouldn't worry about it. Like you said no real choice about it so what does it really matter anyway? Personally 9 months is not a deal breaker for me. Up to a few years ago I paid absolutely no attention to the manufacture date on a tire. And I never had tire trouble. Maybe falls under the heading of "Ignorance is Bliss".
