Looking for south Kern river camp spot near the water

I've never been to the kern river & always heard great stuff about it.
& wonder if the drought has affected the water levels?

I live in the Los Angeles area & wanted to maybe do a simple over nighter so I don't wanna drive too far.

But somewhere near the water that will allow our dog to swim & us to get some fishing in.

I'm bored with Castiac lake & all its broken glass all along waters edge, so I'm willing to drive much further to find better spots.

So any suggestion are appreciated.
  • Either Rivernook or Camp James (right next to each other). Just upriver from Kernville. Anything from tent camping to full hookups at each place. Both are right on the river.
  • Thanks for the input.

But seems I'm gonna hit Big Bear 1st & still want info on the Kern river...
  • Just FYI, and I'm certainly no expert when it comes to that area, but, they have a lot of drownings up there every summer. I lost a good friend on Lake Isabella years ago. The water looks smooth and gentle, but it can fool you. Have a great time, but be careful.
  • We were in Kernville just this last Tuesday. The river is flowing at the bridge pretty good, but no where near normal. There are several campgrounds up the river from Kernville that all are on the river....just pick one that suits you.

    Weekends are pretty crowded...
