Well, since another thread brought up alternative camping?

Another thread brought up the topic of "Glamping", which I found very interesting and is fine for some folks. No reason why there can't be alternatives to the RV experience.

So, I'm a train buff, and I know there are a few Caboose campgrounds across the USA. So I was just curious after the "Glamping" thread and did a search.

I found this one on the internet ... Actually, this is pretty cool. Yea, a little expensive, but consider all the initial expense it took to build this. For train enthusiasts, this is a dream come true.

Watch the video, it's pretty cool.
  • The Castaway Caboose leaves from the Durbin Depot. The East Fork Campground and Stables is right beside the Train Depot. It is a very nice private campground. There are several other scenic trains in the same area. One is the Cass Scenic Railroad, the others leave out of the town of Elkins. They are the Cheat Mountain Salamander and the Tygart Flyer. It is a great area for train buffs. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is also close by, it is the reason for the quiet zone. No cell phone service for 30 square miles. If you have a chance give the place a visit.

  • Marais Pass on US2 south side of Glacier NP...cool crummies, great food and you get to watch the helper crews do the push up and over.

PS...if you ever slept in a wooden one in winter with a coal fired pot belly stove after working a 16 hour long local these steel jobs look like a palace.
  • Quiet zone? Me thinks some have never heard how loud a steamer is...
  • It's in the National Quiet Zone. No phone service.
I've never been there but, I love it. :)
