Dr. Doug-Genesis spray for dogs question

Dr. Doug, we had Jesse on Genesis for his skin and was working fairly well. We ran the 28 day course and since we've stopped his skin has gotten horrible. The manufacturer refused to answer when I asked how long we had to wait before we could run another course. Our vet said we can safely use it every couple of days but we really need to use it more often. Your thoughts? Thanks.
  • You pose a very tough question to answer. I know you have gone through many diagnostic steps and treatment therapies, none have been successful.

    According to the prescribing guidelines:
The safety of long term or repeated use of this product (greater than 28 days) has not been evaluated. Prolonged use or overdosage of any corticosteroid may produce adverse effects. Because absorption of triamcinolone acetonide through topical application on the skin and by licking may occur, dogs receiving triamcinolone acetonide therapy should be observed closely for evidence of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression.

You get to the point where relief of the suffering is more "important" that the potential side effects. You will need to make that decision.

I tend to choose to relieve the suffering...

    Doug, DVM
  • Thanks. Our next step may be a course of steroids. He doesn't appear to be all that uncomfortable but his back is just all bumpy. Doesn't help that a groomer botched his summer shave.
