We learned that game with our 1st Border Collie. He also taught us to never throw a toy he was playing with on his own (self entertainment toy) because that toy was from then on only a toy for fetch. We also learned a Border Collie never gets enough fetch; they only get more fit.
Our guys have a different game. Play with a toy next to the couch and then pretend they accidentally pushed it under the couch then looking at us to get it for them. If we ignore their game they start digging to get it out knowing we will play their game to prevent them from scratching the floor or the couch.
Having a smart dog is not always a good thing.
We know the "under the furniture" game all to well. Gracie, our Golden Retriever, has it mastered! Mama trained.
