  • I think the herding gene is inherent in most herding dogs. Our new sheltie Buttons just keeps staring at us when we're sitting on the sofa and we move, usually to let her out. It's funny how she knows how to get us to do what she wants. She also bumps us from behind when we are walking in front of her - not all the time - but she does it occasionally. She doesn't heel nip - we had another sheltie who did that. The herding dogs are so fascinating, and you are lucky to have such beautiful and smart ones like Lee. Thanks for posting.

  • At least 80% instincts/genetics and then training on the appropriate way to express those instincts
  • Very interesting to watch. I can't imagine the training he goes through to do it without signals from you. Or maybe it's natural instinct? Whichever, nice videos.
