12 volt issue

Have a 2012 Open Range 5er. My 12volt works on my landing gear and my slide outs but no 12 volt lights, water pump, awning and the fridge wont fire on propane (AC is fine on everything.)

  • Found the problem. Hot lead from the battery slipped out. Pushed it back in and tightened the screw all is well.
    Thanks for all the advice.

brad - Your converter/charger unit is working just fine otherwise you would not have 12VDC items working when you are on shore power. Both converter/charger and the battery feed the same 12VDC Distribution Panel where your 12VDC fuses are located.

It seems you have a disconnect between the 12VDC Distribution Panel and the Battery only. In some trailers this is a in-line fuse located close to the battery terminal. Other trailers may have an inline circuit breaker here.

Your landing gear is connected directly to your batteries terminals but is seems the 12VDC Distribution Panel is NOT.

With the Shore Power ON you should read 13.6VDC on the battery terminals indicating that all connection between the distribution panel and the battery is GOOD. The reverse of this is without the shore power ON your ceiling lights should operate from your charged up battery. You should be able to read 12.6-7VDC on the charged up battery terminals when the shore power is OFF. You also read this same 12.6-7VDC on the large BAT cable feeding the 12VDC Distribution Panel when the shore power is off.

I suspect you have a bad connection or a blown fuse or perhaps a bad inline circuit breaker or maybe a simple battery disconnect switch opened (OFF).. Something is not connected between the 12VDC Distrbution Panel and the Battery Terminals.

Continued operations in the mode will eventually end up with a discharged battery and if you leave a battery in a 50% or lower charge state for a long period of time you may do damage to your deep cycle battery.

    just my thoughts

  • Hi Brad,

Landing gear may often not go through the "isolater" switch.
  • Thanks all, I will check the converter/inverter for a circuit breaker button. I did check the two 40amp fuses and they were fine.
Battery isolater switch is ok as the slides and landing gear worked fine.
  • Many converter/inverters have small push button circuit breakers on the side of the unit. Check and make sure those are not tripped.

You may also have a "salesman" switch that turns off most of the 12vdc power. Mine is located just inside the entry door and is easily (and inadvertently) touched when entering or leaving the coach.

  • You probably have a fuse or circuit breaker in the wire between the battery and the converter and fuse panel. That could be bad.
  • IF I understand your post......
When plugged into AC shore power ALL of your inside 12V DC stuff work OK, but when NOT hooked up to AC power only 12V DC stuff that works is landing gear/slides.

Landing gear/slides are wired directly from batteries.
AC power supplies converter when hooked up and converter supplies 12V DC distribution panel.

Batteries alone should supply 12V DC distribution system when not connected to AC power.......either 'battery isolation switch is turned to OFF or 'Reverse Polarity' fuses on converter are blown.
  • Do you have a 50 amp coach? If so, check to see that your cord is plugged in and twisted on your unit. You may be feeding only one leg.
  • Hi,

Check for voltage starting at the battery bank. Then after the fuse, and etc.
