1995 F350 powerstroke

how can l get more torque out of my 1995 7.3 powerstroke Diesel.l am pulling a 11000 lbs camper and going up a slight upgrade its running around 50 to 55 mph. and its to the floor. it is a manual 5 speed. is that about right. is there any modifications l can make that don,t cost an arm and leg. to get more torque. this is my first Diesel and l love it. but don,t know much about it yet. Thanks for everyones help.
  • IF you plan on keeping your truck, I would invest in the Banks kit.

This what I installed on our 97 Powerstroke. Happy with the results.

    Good luck;)
  • You might want a lower gear ratio in the back, but for now down shift. That 7.3 is almost bullet proof. One tough engine. I have a 2002 and it does a good job but on a steep hill I have to down shift and my rear end is a 3.73. If I did a lot of towing in hill country & would change the rear end to a 4.11. Love my 7.3. :)
  • We had a 1992 7.3 and it only put out 180hp new. Always started quick and ran strong but 180hp will only go so fast.

I know by 95 they added a turbo but I'm pretty sure we are still only talking about 220-240hp. Nothing close to the new monster diesels.

Torque isn't your issue. Torque determines if the wheels will turn. HP determines how fast they will turn. Google the power curves and find the peak RPM where you reach peak HP and try to pick a gear that lets you stay near that RPM.
  • Replace the downpipe from the turbo, if it hasn't been done already. The stock downpipe is mashed flat to clear the firewall. Banks (and others) make a round downpipe that flows much better than stock, and mates up with the rest of the factory exhaust.

We ran a Banks Get-Kit on a '95 PSD with an auto and 4.10. It fueled hard enough that you would have to back out of it on the long pulls because of exhaust temperatures (may have been partially because of truck age). It was a different truck with the downpipe and piggyback chip. We finally started overpowering the torque convertor clutch at around 250k, and the truck was sold because of an upgrade to an '01 Cummins 6spd.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. A new compressor wheel, an upgraded turbo with larger turbo housing, more fuel, add an intercooler, and the list goes on. The Get-Kit was a Saturday install, and made a world of difference.
  • Installing a tuner into a diesel works great for increased power but your first step is to make sure everything is working correctly. A 20+ year old truck could have a lot of things wrong with it.
  • You want to shift into a gear that keeps you in the power range.

Your turbo might be starting to fail, if it is smoking (more fuel than air to burn it all).

Most likely you could gain some horsepower by replacing the fuel filter.

Banks used to sell a lot of intercoolers to the new truck owners back in the 90's. A larger intercooler will improve airflow, and cool the air better, providing more power.

What I would not do is install a K&N air filter. For some reason - if the air filter does not collect much dirt in 15,000 miles, it is letting more dust through than the factory paper air filter.

    Good luck,

    Fred.
  • So that is normal. ok then l am good with that. it,s a super truck thought something might be going on with it thats all. thanks
  • That's a lot of trailer for a 1995 7.3 . Be happy with what you got. Leave it stock and it will be dependable. Took me a lot of years to finally leave one like the factory designed it.
  • Shift to a lower gear. Put in a higher rear end (not in the engine)
