2003 E-450 Cutaway chassisFront ABS sensors and Air bags

If one of the front tires rubs through the ABS sensor cable can it be repaired by soldering the wires back together?

Will it work properly or will the entire sensor need to be replaced?

Will disconnecting the battery clear the code and turn off the warning indicator on the dash?

Several years ago there was a short in the after-market alarm system. The alarm system was removed and the damaged wiring was all repaired or replaced. In order to access the wiring under/behind the dash, the steering wheel had to be removed and the dash had to be removed from the vehicle. This involved disconnecting the airbags.

The airbag warning light has been lit on the dash ever since. I know the system was properly reconnected. Is there a way to clear the code from the computer and turn off the airbag warning indicator? Disconnecting the battery has not been successful.
  • OK. I will wait and see what happens when I get rolling again.

If anyone else has any suggestions or comments please chime in.

Thank you everyone for your responses so far.

I think when you drive it, the control module will look at what's going on and turn the light off.
I was installing a 2012 front axle in our 2002 chassis. Axle came with new sensor/cable assemblies but the connectors were different. Rather than try to adapt, I chose to reinstall the 2002 sensors. The knuckles are the same from the two model years, so the fastener holes for caliper brackets, splash plates, and ABS sensors were the same. The 2012 (probably 2008 and up) ABS sensors mount on a little bracket. Bracket mounts the same way your sensor does, but the late model sensor then attaches to the bracket from the back side.

Anyhow, I started the engine to bleed brakes and forgot I hadn't plugged the sensors back in. Very relieved to drive it and see the light go out.
  • Looks like a pain the rear to replace it. Remove the hub and rotor! I just did that last year. I replaced the rotors as they were warped and likely did not get the cable clipped back in place properly which is likely why the wire rubbed on the tire.

I soldered the wires (two within a rubbery coating) today and disconnected the battery. When it was all back together I started the rig and the light flashed once or twice and then stayed on. Maybe it is like you said and the wheel needs to spin in order to clear the code.

Not a really big deal as the brakes work normally otherwise.

About the ABS Sensor... $29 here

But the Hub/Rotor has to come off to change it. Ford corrected that in 2008, sensor can be changed from behind the brake.
Looking for this, a couple comments looked like splicing didn't work.
But let me offer this: I had our ABS Sensors disconnected and ran the engine before plugging them back. Doggone Fault Code! But I drove it a ways and the light went away. So that tells me you might splice, think it didn't work, then find out after a bit that it actually did.
NOTE: These differ Left Front and Right Front. Photo is LEFT. I did not look into the Rear Sensors.

SRS Airbag? I can only guess. That guess is that an ABS Fault Code was set and needs to be cleared with a specialized Code Tool. I am led to believe that Scanners which diagnose Service Engine Soon/Check Engine Lights will not display or clear ABS codes. The better ones may.
