If a solar panel is manufactured using electricity generated from coal (China), how "green" is it? Are there "greener" options?
Nah, a value based consumer. If I'm going to pay a premium for a particular "benefit", then I want to make sure I maximize the value of that "benefit".
In other words, if reducing carbon emissions is the "benefit", then I want make sure one of the qualities is very low low carbon emissions during it's entire lifecycle (manufacture -> use -> disposal).
Some people focus strictly only on "use" and disregard the mountain of carbon emissions produced by greedy, profit-driven Chinese factories (manufacture)...and what winds up in our landfills, aka Mother Earth(disposal).
I look at the entire cost: monetarily and socially, cradle to grave.
I keep thinking to eliminate coal we should build the panels. Otherwise we will just be using coal indefinitely.
Homey, never said suggested that. Just suggesting a good dose of honesty and integrity is needed in these advertising claims.
As consumers we should have information detailing the amount of carbon emissions spent in the production of homogeneous products, like solar panels.
Why do you think this info should be kept secret? I thought sunlight is the best disinfectant for ridding lies and deception.
Imagine if the total carbon emissions spent in manufacturing the RV solar panels on your travel trailer were equivalent to 3X the amount to manufacture a Honda EU2000 inverter/generator.
And also imagine if the breakeven point (carbon parity to the Honda) is 15 years of usage for your RV solar panels. The result, your good deed (going solar) actually caused more harm to Mother Earth.
Homey, asking for information is not a bad gig.
