Hello,my first post.My wife and I have just purchased a Keystone Cougar 25RES 5th wheel. It has 50 Amp service.I have two questions. 1) Can I use a 50 amp surge protector when I use a 30 amp dog bone connector to a 30amp only pedestal?2) I am looking at a progressive 50amp portable SSP-50xl and progressive has a chart that doesn't recommend that for a 5th wheel in a chart they have. (see little red and blue dots) I like the easy and flexibility. And also that I have some protection plugging into the pedestal, with the portable version, not to mention cost is less. 1. Yes, no problems at all.2. The SSP-50xl is not an EMS, just a surge protector. I personally would not recommend it for most any RV. The EMS-PT50X would be a reasonable portable option. Yes, it costs more, but it protects against over and under voltage, which are the more likely problems.

Of course you can as you're going to have to dogbone your 50 amp cable for 30 amp service anyway. However, you don't want just a surge protector such as the one you've mentioned, you want a full featured EMS w/surge protection, in this case an EMS-PT50X if you want a portable unit.

With 50A, I think the line protection capabilities (lo/hi V and floating neutral) are even more useful than surge protection. Well worth the few extra bucks IMO.

Agree, yes it will work and Bestconverter sells them and has the best deal and customer service if you ever have a problem. You shouldn't though, mine has worked perfect.

Not only will it work but one of the features works BETTER on 30 amp the rest every bit as well. I've used them on both 30 and 50.

ONE NOTE... You are more likely to NEED it on 30 amps.

As I already posted the portable and hard wire Progressive EMS units are electrically the same. The only functional advantage the hard wire version offers is that because it's considered "field repairable" one can open the case and remove the delay jumper, thereby increasing delay from 15" to 136". The portable version is not considered field repairable and as such it's delay is fixed at 136" - otherwise the portable and hard wire versions operate the same.

I know myself well enough that I knew a portable would probably just sit in a box ;)

Get the EMS version. I also recommend the hardwired version like the PI HW50C which has to be installed.

We already told you what you want - a Progessive Industries EMS-PT50X. The hard wire version is electrically the same but of course requires installation and has certain warranty limitations the portable version does not.
