I am going to need a 50 ft. 50 amp extension cord this year, I have to change sites, and the way we want to setup the 5th wheel the pedestal will be on the door side towards the front, and the cord plugs in on the off door side rear side. I am looking for guidance. on the one to buy or not to buy. I have found one on Amazon for $189.00.and free shipping. Cord is by NU-Cord. Don't need the ones with he handle's.

I second the recommendation for 25' lengths. Handling a 50' length of 4 conductor #6 with hardware on each end will make your kids be born naked.

I have found the Conntek brand cables and cord ends to be be very high quality. I have used both their complete assemblies and also the cord ends to make my own custom cables.

Cord does not assume the ground like other building wire bundles.
6/4 or 6/3-8/1 would be the correct cord. "SO" describes the packing and cover jacket not the wire.

You can make your own. 50 feet (or how much you need) of 6/3 SO Cord. If you are worried about the length, get 4/3. Heck, making your own cord, you don't even need to make it an extension. Just get one end for the pedestal and one end for your rig. Less connections, less things that can go wrong.

Don't you mean 6/4 SO cord?

I think that the OP may not gain much by making his own, even if he can find it on Ebay.
Is SO wire count not including the ground like romex? If so, correct, make sure you have 4 total connectors.

Well I did some measuring and I may not need an extension cable at all. So for now it's on hold until we can get moved to the campground. I can run what I will need to on 30 amp until the temps get hot, which will give me a couple of months before I will need the 50 amp and I won't need my spliter box.

Thanks for everyone's input and help.

When I needed an extension I just used my 30A cord with an adapter as we did not need the full 50 amps.

I found that 6/4 SOJ at Home Depot and the connectors is more than buying an off-the-shelf cord. I got lucky and found a 25' Marinco at my local CW store on the clearance table.

Branson4020 you may be right. When I get home tonight, I'm going to mock it up. I have a 25 ft. and a 50 ft, 30 amp extension cords, once I get to really looking at it, I'll know what I need.

Thanks for the help and comments. If wife didn't want it in backwards it would be easy. the pedestal would only be a 4-5 foot run. She want to see the lake. and if she's not happy no one (me) will be happy.

I think you only need 50' total, so you could just buy a single 25' extension cord to use with your existing factory power cord. 6 gauge cord will work fine. Voltage drop in 6 gauge would be 2V at 50A. Realistic usage is more like 25A, even with 2 ACs running, so voltage drop in cord is not significant.

You want 6/3 8/1.. I found a 30' pigtail hardwired male no female on EBay for like $90.
Added the female.

ChooChoo makes a good point, at 50 ft the cord should be 4 ga not 6 ga. Hooking two 25 ft 6 ga cords together will not work.

The issue is line drop, the longer the cord, the bigger the wire has to be to safely carry the same power.

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.
