6 volt battery disconnect

Those of you have six volt batteries, like the Trojan T105, which has bolts at the top, instead of posts, what do you use for a disconnect switch? Everything I see on EBay is for side posts, and none for bolts, either top or side. I currently use the blade type for my engine battery, and would like to buy the same type of blade disconnect.
  • Here's my battery monitor shunt and battery switch. Flattened 3/4" copper pipe makes a nice buss bar. Note: These are AGM batteries and locating a shunt near flooded batteries should be avoided due to the corrosive battery fumes. The copper buss bar color is due to battery protective spray.

The switch is a full battery disconnect located on the negative terminal. The large cable on the switch is the chassis ground. The smaller cable on the battery post is for a parallel connected battery. The small wires are for the battery monitor.

  • Good post RoyB

I like the looks of that setup.
I wasn't aware that there was a switch to run 1, 2 or both banks.
I just may seek one out and change my setup.
I got my switch from a local chain of industrial supply parts, Princess Auto. They have a lot of neat stuff but I didn't see the switch you show.
Thanks for sharing that useful info.

This is what my dual banks of two each GC2 6VDC batteries connected in series is going to look like. I have the BLUE SEA four position heavy duty Marine Quality rotary switch. This gives me BANK 1, BOTH BANKS, BANK 2, and TOTAL OFF.

There is no reason to disconnect the cable between two 6VDC batteries. Just consider this a larger 12VDC battery.

This is the BLUE SEA 9001E Series Battery Switch which has the Ring Terminal lug connections... Available from AMAZON...

These Blue Sea switches are sealed and high quality switches. They have make before break contacts inside to prevent arcing. I have been using three of these four position switch since 2008 in my four 12VDC GP24 Battery Bank. All of my wiring uses the 5/16-inch ring terminal lugs...

We used the heck out of the BLUE SEA Marine DC products in my working years. Was HD Marine Quality product of choice. I use their Terminal Blocks and Fuse Terminal blocks in all of my DC Power installations. All available from AMAZON...

This is the same lay out and switch that that I have.
  • I have never encountered a battery-top disconnect device for flooded batteries that did not corrode, and fail at the most inopportune time. One single cable should be connected to each post. Distribution manifolding of the cable should be done from a terminal or stud located at least six inches distant. Two wires into one lug connections are OK but a pair of batteries should have 3 cables connected to them.

  • our rig came with a disconnect switch...so whether your using 2x6 volts or 1 x 12 it works the same inline to shut off power to the rig.

similar to bobsyouruncle. available in rv parts dept's or automotive supply houses.

  • I use a simple inline interrupt switch. It has a knob you rotate for off / on. I prefer this over the blade style.
Mount it in a convenient place and run the positive cable from the battery bank to the switch and then the switch to the cable for the electrical.
    Works for any setup.

    Battery disconnect
