8531-IV igniter help

I have an Atwood 8531-IV furnace that the igniter quit working. Since my trailer is not close to a repair shop, my repair person tells me to try and replace the igniter.

Can anyone tell me how to replace it?
  • You may want to inspect the wire going to the electrode.
Look and even move it away from metal items.
Verify that the electrode is the proper distance from the ground probe.
Remove the ignitor and inspect closely for any cracks in the porcelain.
I would spray it out good with air.
    Yes, electrodes are fairly in-expensive.
Look at your circuit board closely, then look at your water heater circuit board. They maybe the same. Could swap them out to see if problem switches with them.
  • This actually happend late last winter and we "limped" through the rest of the cold days with a space heater. At one point I had a problem with it, and the insulation of the wire was probably chewed by a rodent so I removed that part and put a new end on that goes to the board. It worked fine for a few months now nothing. Basically the furnace goes through its sequence of events, you no longer hear the "ticking" of the igniter anymore.

My RV guy does not have the capability of testing the board so he suggested starting with the igniter.

    Ideas?
  • Welcome to RV.net!
The majority of the time it is not the elctrode(ignitor). It is a dirty sail switch not allowing power to get to the circuit board.
Blowing the compartment out may solve the problem.
Here is manual ofr the furnace. The electrode is located on the right side of the exterior access.
Locate sail switch on the drawing for where you need to cocentrate blowing the unit out. An easy air source is a can of air used on computers.

What is the main symptom of your furnace problem? Just not igniting?
