A/c wont run off gen

I have a 2011 four winds motor home. It came equipped w/ an Onan generator. The gen starts and works fine for everything except running the roof a/c. If I start the gen and let it run for a few minutes and then turn on the A/C,the blower either runs for a few seconds and shuts off, or not turn on at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Art,

If you would fill in the model numbers of the generator and the A/C unit that would be a help. And while you are at it, get into the AC panels and check all the screws. They do get loose and cause all manner of grief.

They make a Hard Start Kit for the AC's which is a a larger capacitor to help when running on Gen. I would look into that as well as the size of the gen and its output vs the needs of the ac. You may have to small a gen for the ac. Oh did you turn off the electric hot water heater? That saps loads of power and could also be your answer.

What's the load like on the genset? With mine, when I start it up it goes into bulk charge mode for a couple of minutes which really reduces the available output. I usually wait until the current draw from the batteries goes down before switching on the AC - and also make sure that I don't have the electric water heater on when the compressor is starting.

Everything will play nice together if I pay attention to how I introduce the loads onto the genset.

If I don't do it right, breakers will trip and I have to do it over.
