Rectifiers are rated at 20C. At 150C a 50 amp rectifier may droop to 15 amperes capacity, safe. Couple that with vulnerability to transient voltages (AC compressor clutch, slide-out motor, starting an onboard generator) and the stage is set for your auto parts counterman to smile a broad grin.

Alternators do not "suck" cool air. When 200F air is drawn -into- the unit what do you suppose does -not- happen? I believe it a near miracle that rectifier bridges and voltage regulators survive this cruelty as well as they do.

I am tinkering in the MOSFET rectification arena. Fascinating.

Sch I was going to explaine it but Mr. Wizard beat me to it.

MOST common alternator failure is the diodes, by doing it the way he's doing it the load on the internal diodes is actually reduced, resulting in a cooler diode stack and longer life.

I've replaced my share of alternators
An external rectifier connected to the house batteries
Means less heat/load on the internal diodes
Reducing the chance of failure
Most alternator failures are diodes, or bearings
The "regulator" is going to control the output
Heat damage is accumulative, everyone the diodes get hot the amount of damage increases, reducing the heat, will increase the life

Cannot see how this would improve alternator durability, as the parallel system is only going to place an additional load on the alternator which was only originally sized to do the chassis???
