Any tips on replacing electric brakes.

Question

I'm getting ready to replace the electric brakes on my toy hauler. I'll be installing the complete assembly: backing plate with brakes and magnet attached but will hold off on the drums until they are removed so I can inspect and measure them.

It looks like a very straight forward job, but I thought I'd check to see if there is anything I should be aware of before I start. I will be repacking the bearings and replacing the seals while everything is off.

I got an education on this subject awhile back and some will disagree. The drum not only works in conjunction with the shoes it also works in conjunction with the magnet that is on the side of the drum. If you turn the drum for the new shoes you should to turn the side of the drum for the magnet. Try to find a shop that does both and if you do the price will be close to the same as new ones.

Unless the drums have some abnormal wear (grooves) your better off not turning them because not only are they thin to start with but the arc will be off for the new shoes and your contact patch will be lessened.

I never turn drums or even disc brake rotors unless they are out of round.  Yes, the new shoes/pads will have to wear in to the older grooves, but when you turn a drum/rotor you make it thinner.  Shoes/pads are cheaper than new drums/rotors.  Thinner can't dissipate heat as well and they will get hot and warp in no time.

It's a straight forward install with 4 bolts.  Just note that the right and left brake assemblies are different if you have not already.  Bolt 'em on, hook up 2 wires. Very easy.
