I never turn drums or even disc brake rotors unless they are out of round. Yes, the new shoes/pads will have to wear in to the older grooves, but when you turn a drum/rotor you make it thinner. Shoes/pads are cheaper than new drums/rotors. Thinner can't dissipate heat as well and they will get hot and warp in no time.
