Atwood water heater help

Water heater will come on, run for about 15 minutes then shut off. After about 5 minutes you can turn on again me it will run for another 15-20 minutes. All other gas appliances work great. Has pilotless initation
Thanks
  • What you descibe is classic NO water in the tank. The time element points to that. Open the Pop off valve and see if water comes out. Also, you state the water does not seem as hot. Check and make sure the BYPASS valves are in the correct position. If not, you are not pulling hot water out of the tank and that also would be indicated by the short cycling. Doug
  • could be debris in the burn tube, spider webs will create havoc. directions on how to do a resset is usally found on the inside cover.
    I would try
1/ clean the flu/ burn tube
2/ clean all contact at point of connection
3/ check the red lead from gas valve to terminal overheat switch.
4/ remove wire harness from control board and clean contacts.
5/ have the circut board tested under load condition.

We had a simular issue, chased it for months. The problem acelerated to the point of no ingtion, Our problem was #5. Had the board tested and was found to be defective, The tech said that it would have of been 50/50 in finding the problem earlier, due to the board was shorting out itermititly. replaced the board and no problem since.
I still would do the process of elimination, as the control board is't cheap
    good luck
  • Hmm, it could be the water heater overheating. The Atwood has two thermostats - the normal one and an over-temperature one that shuts everything down if it hits a very high temperature. Are you able to check how hot the water is getting (with a kitchen thermometer or something)?
  • Well I would check thermal cut off. Unit may be bad or sensing hi temp due to flue blockage. I tried to attach a manual but couldnt figure out how on this fourm, you can go to atwoods site and download one.

    Good Luck
  • Replace the thermocouple $8-10 if that does not fix it , its probably the control valve if you have a good supply of propane.
