Axle To Axle Check

Mono filament is fine. You are not dealing with tolerances in the thousands of an inch.

And this is a good way to measure to see if axles are aligned.

But it can also be done with a long tape measure.

It may be a hassle but dog tracking can be initiated by a broken spring center bolt or frozen shackle. If the steering wheel is not straight the gears in the steering box are not on "Center High Point". Wouldn't hurt to take a look. Dog tracking with tag axle eats tires.

Why could this not be done on a class A ????

My 93 Pace Arrow DP on an Oshkosh chassis had a "slight" dog track! Funny thing, I met an owner of a 94 Pace Arrow DP owner and HIS rig also had a slight dog track to it! LOL

Finding centerline is a snap as long a both people measuring know what it is thy are hooting for.

Ensuring center-to-center equal distance means straight tracking and on a trailer measuring from center of hitch point to front axle then axle to axle means all the difference in the world for tire wear. Critical on three axle rigs like the one I helped with on Monday (an 8 ton flatbed with 14.5" wheels).

Measure to the rim on the front edge. Lot easier to to get a good measurement. Where the axle goes so does the rim.

That makes more sense than trying to determine the centerline of the axle.

This is how I checked my trailer alignment. Steel tape worked well for me.
Pin to front axle and axle to axle. Ended up with new springs. When they sag unevenly the alignment suffers.

So what are you trying to accomplish?

:) I wrote "heavy" and 40-60 lb mono-filament is damned hard to stretch and I assumed when I wrote it that the individuals who measure and calibrate wheelbase would have greater than a double digit I.Q.

The "problem" with metal wire is that it sags, kinks, and misbehaves.

Use heavy mono-filament and misconduct great enough to cause stretching will pull an arm out of it's socket.

Spectra is GREAT, but rather inconvenient to find unless ordered online. Thank you for mentioning it. It would be a great improvement.
