Many many times I have read people giving instructions to fill a battery "To the bottom of the filler tube" or "To the bottom of the split ring".
DEKA, and the person who trained me so many years ago I lost count, both say/said, Fill to just BELOW the bottom of the filler tube/split ring,, like 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch.
In fact if the battery state of charge is less than 100% you might wish to go a bit lower than that, then charge, and finsh topping off.
WHY.. Well as the battery gasses during charging, (Very common epically if you fast charge) it may happen that gas builds up around the tube faster than the "Split" can vent it, and when this happen fluid rises in the tube, now blocking the split completely and the battery spits at you. Leaving a bit of a gap, gives better venting.
