Best Residential Refrigerator-----Works Good w/Inverter

My 8 year old Norcold adsorption fridge is starting to act weird. What is best residential fridge to replace it? I never boondock. It would be plugged in except for around 6 hours/day when travelling. I hoped to get by without adding more batteries; two large ones came with my HH2. Of course I know I have to fit the hole where the old fridge was.

How big an inverter would I need?
  • Modern refrigerators all seem to use tiny pumps and rely on extremely good insulation to keep things cold. That's why they often recommend you give the fridge 24 hours to cool down. I don't see any reason not to go as big as you can, but definitely avoid the ice maker. Power consumption ratings on Auto defrost is definitely a power hog, but I recall finding some DIY threads for disabling auto-defrost if you can't find one without it.

  • I think an 18 cubic foot fridge/freezer would fit into the hole. Any reason not to put as big a one as possible, as long as I stay away from ice maker/auto defrost?
  • I put in a Summit 8.6 cu/ft residential fridge and a Microsolar, 1000Watt pure sine inverter. Got the inverter off Amazon for $170. Works great.

  • Hi,

A 1000 watt pure sine wave inverter may cost as little as $200 when on sale. Keep away from Chinese brands. DAMHIK
  • Ah Chinese thinking, read right to left.

WHAT INVERTER works best with residential refrigerator? Pure sine wave is more efficient. So much so it is worth the premium price difference. MSW wave powered refrigerator motors run hotter, and the inverter runs hotter. To argue this point come down and speak with my Trace 4024, the refrigerator freezer and three large chest freezers. I think Viking, makes a pretty decent quality refrigerator. The motor runs 26 degrees warmer on MSW. I had to install fans on the refrigerator and three Tor Rey freezers. Playing across the motor compressors. A PSW 4,000 watt inverter is beyond my means.
  • Two batteries fed by the alternator s/b fine to power a 1000w sine wave inverter.
  • I put in a Whirlpool WRT111, 10.7 cu ft, fit fine...had room to add a
    pull-out pantry beside it.

Works fine on MSW 1500 watt inverter.

Lowes had it for less than $400,00
  • The Samusung 197 that everyone installed has been replaced with the Samsung RF18HFENBSP. It is basically the same unit.

Leaving the unit for 6 hours without power is no problem. I have gone 20 because of a transfer switch problem and everything was still frozen
  • Used to be Samsung, but the model that everyone used has apparently been discontinued. So, your going to have to take the nocold out and measure the opening and go shopping.
