Hi Team,

Considering adding a Cell phone signal booster to our rv. Something like this one:

Wilson Signal Booster - Small Area...

Anyone have and opinions/experience with them?

Thanks

The mobile one is interesting as I could take it from Truck to 5th wheel. Having boost in Truck when traveling would be very useful....

I was considering placing the outside antenna on the TV Antenna. This would let me raise/lower and point the antenna.

As far as a minimum of 20 feet.....I could maybe get 15....

I have this one and it definitely improves the signal and is worth every penny (it is a little pricey). http://www.wilsonelectronics.com/store/display/245/38/mobile-4g
My advice is worth what you paid for it!

The 4G has a very limited 3-4ft range on the inside antenna. Fine in a car or truck, but not so good in a larger RV with multiple users.

I use a Wilson "2-way repeater" type booster (This kind has an outdoor antenna, and an indoor antenna) and have seen it take my phone from basically one bar to 1 short of full signal strength. It works well when it works.

I have also used passive repeaters (2 antennas hooked together one high one low) back in the sticks and bricks, that also helped when I was in the basement.

And I have used just the antenna with a connector.. NOW, there are 3 kinds of phones and thus 3 kinds of connectors.

1: Phone has a jack (rare) and antenna plugs in, this is the best but see "Rare"

2: Phone has a "Finger" style antena Coupler fits over finger no electrical connection but inductive/capacitave coupling,, #2 on the YIPPIE list.

3: Phone is basically a flat card, no detectable antenna (it is internal) like my Samsung S-III.

Now the S-III I have wears an Otter Box Defender as an outer "Skin" when I am walk-about this snaps into a belt clip so it walks with me.

Wilson also makes a "clip" that goes over the phone (Do not know if it will fit over the defender) and couples to the internal antenna via capacitive coupling (This is also how those "through the glass" Antennas work).

This is #3 on the Best Connection list and I might add it is a very tight race, not a lot of difference between 1, 2 and 3.

So the need for an external antenna jack is highly overrated.

One final suggestion: IF you get the amplifier. Make sure you can turn it off if not needed. And check the lights to make sure it does not go into self oscillation. (A very bad thing)

Wilson is a good company. However, you will want to use one of their systems designed for mobile applications and not for buildings. If you use a "building" system you may not be able to achieve the physical separation between the indoor and outdoor antennas that is required to avoid interactions between them. The mobile systems are better designed for RV applications.

If you can handle the minimum 20ft installation separation between the inside and outside antennas, along with the need to aim the directional outside antenna towards the nearest cell tower, the DT4G should work while stationary anyway. Going down the road usage would be hit or miss though

Things may have improved, but six years ago I got a Wilson antenna and booster for the MH. The booster did nothing so I sent it back.

The antenna did give me one extra bar on the cell phone. The problem there was I had to have an external antenna direct plug in for the cell phone to gain that extra bar. Without a cell phone that had a direct plug in, I got no gain at all.

Looks like your setup is a much improved version and may have better luck. Make sure you can return the product if you run into issues like I had back in the day.
