Mex I failed to answer your bedrock question.
This used to be a lake bottom--so the "foundation" is potash. Lots and lots of it. Farther north where almost no one lives there is bedrock. It's possible that at least some of the uranium used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki came from Saskatchewan, but no one knows for sure.
