Electric Tongue Jack. 4500 lb or 3000 lb

Shopping for a new electric jack.
I'm expecting about 1200 lbs of tongue weight.

I'm looking at Husky Brute jacks (both 4500 and 3000)
Is the 4500 lb jack total overkill?
Will the 3000 lb be more than adequate?

There is about a $30 difference between the two.

Buy the biggest jack you can afford and install.
A bigger jack will operate quicker and have less problems.
  • Either one will work but remember you're not only lift the the trailer but partly lifting the rear of the truck (when hitching up the WD system)
  • As other posters have indicated, extra capacity is not a bad thing. I caution that you should measure the diameter of the existing unit to make certain that whatever unit you purchase will properly fit the opening in the trailer frame. If I remember correctly, the larger capacity jack is larger in diameter and may not fit the current opening in the trailer frame.

    Best of luck.

  • No such thing as overkill on a tongue jack. Not having one that can do the heavy lifting on the other hand will fail miserably when you need it.
  • At .02 cents a lb the extra 1500 lb is cheap lifting and byways hit it on the nose.
