Electric vehicle EVSE install in RV. Pics.

So busy day yesterday running around the valley picking up supplies and paying bills etc. About 155 kilometers, great day, top down, not too hot out. Picked up 5 kw at a level two mall charger while we were inside looking for stuff (try finding a 1.5 inch single impact socket). Any way when we got home we plugged into to the new EVSE. Right now we are just using the 30 amp 110 RV plug on the post as the motohome is plugged into the 50 amp plug. All works well and once you get used to the app (or online PC display) its fairly straight forward. Last night about 9:30 it sent us an email saying the car was charged. The car sent one as well.

Anyway what I have learned from the helpful staff at the company (California company and it is built right here in California), is that if the source is 110 volt, regardless of the current provided the most current you will get is 16 amps. This is a protocol thing and can not be changed. eg...the J-1772 protocol states that with a 110 connection the most a compliant J-1772 will provide to the car is 16 amps. If you want the bigger currents you need to be on 220...then you can go up to 80 amps if your EV will accept it and your EVSE is rated for it. Thats Tesla territory though.

Tony has all the good stuff for charging an EV.

Awww, the J wall. Very nice. However I only have room for an additional 50 amp 220 circuit at the house so overkill for us. Its also hard wire not portable so can't plug into an RV plug or Dryerplug...or al east not without some mods. Its also more than twice the price but definitely a nice solution for those who have the EV's that can utilize that kind of charging capacity.

EVSE stands for Electric vehicle supply equipment. It is the hardware interface that connects electric vehicles to supply current. Electric vehicles almost always come with a basic EVSE but you can upgrade to better featured and faster units. Total speed is still limited by the onboard charger.

We use this for our Smart ED. Not to sure what battery chemistry is using. Lithium something or other. This EVSE is overkill for our car but wanted something for future needs as well. We are replacing our last oil burner this year and whatever replaces it will have a minimum 6.6 KW charger and maybe a 10KW. This EVSE's normal home is our garage back home but it is portable, hence the 50 amp RV plug. Having it mounted keeps it out of site and less susceptible to being ripped off.

We are in Palm Springs area right now and there seems to be a ton of public chargers around, mostly located at places we shop so not sure how much we are going to use it. Many are sponsored by the stores so zero cost. Just swipe the network card and it comes up as zero dollars. Might be a Palm Springs thing. At home we plug in two or three times a week though so it will get its use there.

I see no reason to even install this unit on your motor home... Get the portable model from Tesla with the J-1772 handle already installed , for all other electric vehicles.

Good morning. This has the standard J-1772 connector. It is scalable by the iphone App from 5 to 40 amps so no problem sharing with the RV requirements. It's not so much that the RV needs an EVSE installed but we need to take one with so why not take the one off the garage wall...which is its main location.
