Furnace cover is falling off

Well, it's not really falling off (yet). It's an Atwood furnace cover with a screw in each corner. It screws into a plastic frame piece that is thoroughly fastened to the RV outside wall. That plastic piece is aging and cracked in quite a few places, but is still very attached and water tight, except for the small missing corner where the screw attached. I'm thinking of just using some strong double sided tape for that corner. It's the top, rear location. Hopefully, that should get me through the season, or at least until I can get another plastic frame.

Does anybody have suggestions when replacing the plastic? It looks like it may just have the same material that is used on windows. I can't remember the name of it, but it comes on tape.
  • That's what I would do. I would drill a hole through a piece of steel and JB Weld a nut onto it. Then after that is dried JB Weld the strip onto the broken area. Make sure you also get some epoxy in that crack in the corner. Also if you take the screw to Home Depot or Lowes they have a display in the nut and bolt aisle where you find the correct hole that the bot will screw into and it tells you the size and pitch of the nut to buy.
  • That's kind of what I thought when I looked at it last night. Glue/screw a metal scrap into that corner.

    Thanks for the feedback!
  • Yours is different from my older model it seems.

Perhaps you could attach a metal piece over the damaged hole, with a hole drilled in that metal piece to take the door screw, something like the way mine has it.

  • Not sure which screws you mean. Here is what mine is like, with the two big screws holding up both the inner cover and the outer door, where they are hinged at the bottom. When open they just hang down.

Mine is an 8531-11. What is yours? Can you clarify about the plastic parts etc?
