I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum, please tell me if I'm not. We are full timers for about 4 months now. We travel with 2 dogs and 2 cats. We buy bottled water from the grocery for all of us. Our last rental house had awful well water so we started buying bottled water. At about a dollar a jug it's getting expensive, but I'm not sure that I want to take the chance of us or my animals getting ****py water. So this weekend I saw a few trailers with this filter thing hooked on to the water connection. So I'd like to ask for opinions or advice on these things. If I was to connect one of these, would I be able to stop buying bottled water or do they just make bad water better? It's a white canister looking thing and I did see a Camco one in Walmart for about 20 bucks. Any advice? Buy one or stay with bottled?

What you suggested may work for you, it does a lot of people. One of the things you'll quickly learn full timing is the water is different all over the country. The easiest way to take care of it is get a three filter system. One would be a carbon filter, one a sediment filter and I forget what our third one is. Go to the RV filter store web site, look around and then call them.On our DP there was one filter already so we only had to buy an additional two filter set up to go with it. This set up also takes care of calcium spotting dishes and glasses when you're in the south west.RV Filter StoreWe've got about 14 months on our first set of filters and we travel with two sets of spares, but haven't had to change them yet. After 14 months I think they're still doing well as no spotting from calcium, and there's no slow down in water volume.Bill

The filters DO NOT remove germs and most contaminants.By the way some bottled water is worse than city water as far a contaminants.IT IS A MYTH THAT BOTTLED WATER IS BETTER AND CONTAINS NO CONTAMINANTS. All bottled water has to do is meet the same standard as tap water

Get a quality under-the-sink RO (Reverse Osmosis) system. It'll remove much of the harmful stuff in water and make it better tasting. Also, it will supply all the drinking water you need for you and your pets.I use a Watts 4-stage RO system. RVWaterFilterStore has some good systems. Here's a Watts 5-stage RO system.

Add on in-line filter.Bottled water is just processed tap water and all those plastic bottles go into land fills....costly & wastefulR/O 1 gallon of treated water and 2-3 gallons of brine (waste water). That is also costly & wasteful

The only time we buy bottled water is in Mexico. And even there I brush my teeth, wash, shower etc with what comes from the tap BUT we fill the tank and add a little bleach. There is a filter and separate tap in the galley for drinking The filter takes the chlorine taste out. In Canada and the USA? Never worry--just keep the tank clean.

DISCLAIMER: PuR Water Filtration Project Engineer Here.

Sanitize the system with bleach. Flush completely and then use a
PuR Faucet Mount filter with 1 click removal. Take the filter off when traveling so it dosen't bounce on the faucet and damage it.

It will remove any chlorine (residual from sanitization or inherent with the water supplied) Also TTHM's (byproducts of sanitization) and will taste great. It will not remove bacteria but any US potable water supply should not have bacteria in it. It will remove all cysts.

Been RV'ing for about 40 years all over this country, using our onboard fresh water tank and water from wherever we are. Have never had an issue of any kind. We do have a canister filter that I attach at the campground facet first. We do not use bottled water except for drive time.

I spend the winters in the RGV area of Texas and went to the local Home Depot and purchased a single outside filter with a removal/replaceable carbon cartridge with a life span of three months. I replace the filter at the beginning of the season and mid way through and enjoy odor free refreshing water for coffee, drinking and cooking.

The last line is incorrect. Municipal water systems have more stringent testing and requirements than bottled water.

We use a Pur water container, it holds about a gallon and a half. We just fill it from the tap and in a few minutes filtered water is ready to go.

We keep it on the kitchen counter top with the spigot overhanging the counter a bit. It has a LARGE filter compared to the Brita and does a great job with cleaning out the contaminants.
