EEPROM does not require a battery to hold data; you can think of it as flash memory if that helps. (Flash is actually a subset of EEPROM, designed to have the ability to be erased in relatively large chunks.) My guess is it has no battery in it, assuming the marketing speak coincides with the engineering speak (which is always a dicey proposition).

We used hobbs that were 4 - 40 volts years ago. Like said above, it doesn't matter.

Honyewell says 15000 thru 15008 are all 4 to 40 volts

I recently purchased a 12v-36v version on Ebay for under $10. My old one died about the same number of hours in as yours. No matter how much you pay, all these hour meters are disposable. I've had aircraft grade versions die after a couple hundred hours and had cheapies go well over a thousand.

A 12V one will work fine.

Here is one reputable place to purchase one, but I have no clue whether their price is particularly good or otherwise.

Almost every small airplane has one of these. Find one at an aircraft salvagers that can't be recertified for use in a plane. They may just give you one.

What's it for--an Onan generator? If so, I think they run off of a (nominally) 12V supply. You could always take a voltmeter and measure the voltage at the hourmeter connection since you have it accessible.

OK, so what do I need for my Onan generator? Will 12+ VDC units work?

It's could be 4 to 40. They make various models and some are 10 to 80 volts dc because some industrial lift truck equipment runs on 72 volts.
