They use the SAME refers that you buy at Lowes/HD or any appliance retailer. Some CAN be turned completely OFF. Funny thing is, IF you read the operators manual that is FOR the refer it will state how to do that. Some, you can turn the cooling system OFF, but the interior lights will still come on when you open the door. The refer MANUAL will also state if this is the type you have. It is AMAZING how much info you can get if you just READ the appliance owners manual. The REASON the refers must use a specific way of turning them off is simple. IF you have a power outage(this is for residential refers), you want that electronic refer to come back ON when the Power is restored to your house. Doug
