How long of a coax on carry out sat dish

15 years ago I had a customer with a 1994 Tiffin motorhome. He was upset because the CABLE input and cable thru out the RV was RG 59 instead of RG 6 and wanted Tiffin to replace all the coax with RG6 even tho he was out of warranty. I asked why it was important to have the RG 6. He stated that Direct TV told him his tripod mounted dish would NOT work with RG 59 coax cable and he stated since he could not get it to work then Direct was correct. Well, he did not understand HOW RV's run the coax input which is NOT a Sat input. I then charged him to rewire his Winegard booster to allow his Tripod to work. I then had him set up his tripod at the dealership and he locked into the 101 sat. I then connected a 250 foot box of RG 59 coax between his tripod and the input of his motorhome. With his coax the 250 foot and the 50 feet inside the RV we had at least 350 foot of RG 59 cable. He had flawless reception and when going to signal strength there was no difference between the 350 feet and the regular 100 feet of cable. That said, some Domes and such require a specific shielded Coax for best operation----King dome's are one, They supplied a special Coax double shielded cable for installation. So, use the shortest cable you can when installing and then after you verify reception, just plug in a 250 box of RG 6 cable and see if you loose reception. I doubt you will and you have proof that 300 foot of cable will work with your portable system. Doug
