How to remove steps?

Mine are showing signs of metal fatigue and need to be removed for repairs..welding...anyone know how the box itself is usually attached?
I can see the four bolts holding the stairs in place, but so far, cannot see how the box is secured.

A '99 Triple E C.

Have intitiated contact with Triple E.

  • Take it to a local Welder/Fabricator. They should be able to weld in small stitches and using water to cool it down between doing each stitch. I would attempt it if it were mine. They will tell you if they think it can be done.
  • Thanks for the two replies. After a day of removing stuff and crawling around inderneath, and yep, looking at all kinds web based info sites, I am further ahead but still in a pickle. The supporting panels that make up the underside of the 'box' have rusted badly in one area/seam/corner. The supporting framework for the stairs themselves are bolted to that.

The problem now,is that behind that panel is wood. Welding is going to heat that wood in a hurry. I am thinking that if I spray in a fire retardent and then soak/spray it, prior to welding.

If the 'box' was easily released, I'd do that in a flash but it looks like a huge mess to do that.
    Thoughts?

  • The whole box comes out with the stairs when you remove the bolts on the sides.
  • Go to a site and look at a picture of a new set of steps and I think you will find they are not in a box and the 4 bolts you see should let you remove the steps.
