Landing gear maintenance

I was just reading a post about a landing gear squeak. I got to wondering what the proper proceedure is for taking care of them. I tried to examine them the other day by feeling around. I noticed that there is a metal cover on top of each leg and that one of them had fallen off. I also noticed that there was grease evident on top too.

This is a single electric motor system. I didn't see any brand name or manufacturers plate or anything like that. Of course between the tri-focals and my back killing me trying to squat down and look up in "there" I am not sure my inspection amounted to much. Can someone outline what should be done?

If you have a metal cap on top then it is likely yours are made by Venture Mfg. They are a wealth of information. Clean dirt, spray the legs where they slide together with silicone spray. Add a finger full of fresh grease to the gears on top. Thats about all you can do. Unless of course you actually take the legs out of the trailer and take them apart.
