Motorhome heat pump troubles

You have 2 compressors. try to run each compressor separately to determine WHICH is pulling the excess amps.EACH compressor on your model only pulls 8.3 amps. The TOTAL amp draw on your unit with both compressors running and fans is 23.8 amps. If you have a defective compressor the odds are the amp draw would continue to go up until the overload or 120 breaker would trip. The odds are your RUN capacitor for the compressor or both is defective. Since capacitors are cheap, I would replace BOTH compressor run capacitors since your system is older. It may be both run capacitors are bad and the reason your amp draw is so high. Doug

I would have an AC tech come out and check it out.

Are you sure it's not maybe using heat strips instead of the heat pump? How cold out is it?

Typically, when any A/C starts drawing excessive amps, the compressor is in the early stages of failure. While I hope that is not your case, the odds are not in your favor.

Low voltage causes high amp draw. Check voltage at the unit, and if it's low then check the pedestal and points in between until you find where the difference arises. Could be just one loose connection.

Thanks folks. We'll address the capacitor situation in the morning. Temps here have been well into the 50s, so that shouldn't be the problem. Will advise ASAP.

You stated 40 amps from your EMS system. THAT figure should include ALL the 120 appliances running. Did you take that into account for the total amp draw? You need to shut down all 120 appliances (Water heater/refer/TV's/Inverter/charger/anything on 120, then check your amp draw. At 24 amps for your HP, that leaves only 6 amps available before the EMS starts shedding the loads. Doug

You may replace several "easy-to-change components", only to find that the problem still exists.

Then there is the safety issue... You would hope the breaker trips off (if this issue continues).

A defective breaker has potential of causing fire. You may need to have the breaker replaced (if your unit is actually drawing excess amps).

OK. Now I'm nervous. We'll just call a repair tech. Any recommendations in the Tucson area?
