New Brakes for 2010 Montana

I have the 2010 Montana 3455SA 5ver and need to purchase new brakes. Gonna buy whole assembly such that you only have to reattach the wires and everything is new. Problem is knowing what size to order. ANybody have any idea? Keystone was no help, saying they have no way of knowing, which I think is silly. Dealer could not tell me via phone and we are 2 hours away. He said to measure width and depth of drum, and get axle capacity and etrialer or others would know. Not so! Everyone just once me to give them a part number. I am stuck. ANy help would b appreciated.

Oh, already adjusted them, and found one shoe no longer bonded. Have to replace them.
  • 12" x 2" with axles at 6750lbs each. I do want the self adjusting, so now my question is what brand is the best, as well as a good place to buy them? Looking at etrailer.com and camping world, but on brakes I do not take chances.
  • A 2010 Montana has 12" x 2" 7K brakes. The best idea is to buy the self adjusting replacement package (backing plates, shoes, magnets, etc..) and install yourself as you said. A few bolts and two wires and you are done.
  • you should have a dexter axle,ck you ID tax on side of you 5er for axle GW..its either a 6K or 7K axle, then pull you drum/hub off to meassure your brake shoe size plus wheather or not you have self adj brakes...now my 2011 Montana has 7k axle w/self adj brakes, and shoe size 12x2..but pull and ck to see what you have..

Post it here along with the axle code....

Possibly take them to NAPA and match them up. If some kid rolls his eyes for a part number wave him off and ask the old guy in the back as he will probably know just by lookin'.
  • Write down any numbers on the axles or brake parts. Also take digital pictures if you can. Then Google the part numbers you come up with. You should be able to find out the manufacturer and the brake drum size. From this you can talk to one of the suppliers already mentioned.
My axles were stamped with the capacity and some other info on it. The back side of my backing plates are stamped with the Dexter name and have the lining size on them. I am not sure if Keystone used Dexter or not. My axles are 6000#, but they (Dexter & Eastern Marine)recommended upgrading to the 7000# axle brake assemblies.
    Good luck in your search.
  • If all else fails pull a wheel and hub and do a direct measurement of the shoes (length and width). They'll be something like 10x2" or 12x2-1/2. I've found the folks at e-trailer.com very knowledgeable and their website is loaded with info.
  • X2 on the axle tag.... Also check the drum , there is always a number stamped on it.. take that and call the Drum mfg.. ( Dexter ect..) and tell them the number on the drum , they will give you all the info needed..
After you have all that info , I like dealing with BOTH E-Trailer and Eastern Marine . .
Remember when ordering the complete assembly that there is a right AND left side....
  • There is a metal tag attached to each axle. Get those numbers. From that any good dealer will give you the correct part. Also the drum diameter and width will be molded onto them. Which is all you need.

BTW, why do you need new brakes? Grease contamination? Or just loss of braking.

I like Eastern Marine for trailer lights and parts. They list RV trailer brakes by Diameter and Width, along with axle capacity and sometimes other information.

Eastern runs a Brake Sale a couple times a year if you can wait.

I've also found that when I call, I can talk to somebody who's helpful. Might be worth a call. They've actually gone to inventory and measured parts. Oh, they have Inventory? Yep, at least some. Many sellers today take your order and transmit to warehouse or manufacturer. I may have been lucky, but when I wanted new cross members for our galvanized boat trailer, they had the two kinds I was interested in and gave me comparative measurements.
  • Is there a number on the backer plate? Maybe, if you get the axle taq information, someone could match the brake size for you.
