Onan 10K Voltage Adjustment

Onan QD Model: 10HDKCA11506B Spec: B S/N: I070102488

How do you adjust the voltage on this generator? The service manual which includes HDKCA (Spec A-E) documents a procedure that involves rapidly pressing start 6 times. This procedure does not cause the status light to change for the next step as the manual indicates.

Gee, and here I used to start the whole diagnostic process with a speed check of 60.0 Hz., then when that checked out I advanced further to voltage.

Voltage adjustment with a big genset regulator

Insert flat blade screwdriver turn clockwise to increase voltage, counter-clockwise to decrease voltage.

What's missing is an accessory to use with GoogleGlasses.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get through with this grumpiness. Being grumpy makes me grumpier.

Well embarrassingly enough it might be a cockpit problem. The directions clearly state to test within the first minute and I may have waited longer than 1 minute. Thanks for the posts as they helped me to see the problem from another perspective. Later this week Iโ€™ll try again.

Good points including the ATS load. Thanks

If that doesn't resolve it then I'll call Cummins and get their input.

One time i was trying to set the idle adjustment out of the manual on my marquis 7000 and everytime i would read it i'd understand it better and finally got it . It sounds like you have to catch that just right pushing the start switch . Try a few seconds later or earlier .
Where are you hooking your meter it says no load if you have a auto transfer switch you could have some kind of small load in the coach this could be causing a problem .

Point taken and I'll try again. I did have the printed procedure in front of me but on step 3 the status light did not blink. But cockpit problems are always possible.

Well it looks pretty staight forward some times in a manual i have to read it several times as i am missing a step .
ADJUSTING VOLTAGE
The controller has a voltage set mode that is enabled by rapidly pressing START 6 times during the
first minute after startup. To adjust voltage:
1. Disconnect all genset loads and connect accurate meters to measure AC output voltage.
WARNING HAZARDOUS VOLTAGE!
Touching uninsulated live parts inside the
genset or connected equipment can result
in severe personal injury or death. For your
protection, stand on a dry wooden platform
or rubber insulating mat, make sure your
clothing and shoes are dry, remove jewelry
from your hands and use tools with insulated handles.
2. Start the genset and let voltage and frequency
stabilize for 5 to 10 seconds.
3. Rapidly press START 6 times. The status lamp
will start to blink once a second to confirm that
the controller is in voltage adjust mode.
4. To adjust voltage up, press START and release quickly. Each time START is released,
voltage will increase approximately 0.6 volt.
5. To adjust voltage down, press the control
switch to START and release in approximately
1 second. Each time START is released, voltage will decrease approximately 0.6 volt.
6. Normal operation will resume in 20 seconds after the last adjustment. The last adjustment will
be saved by the controller.
Note: Voltage adjustments will not be saved if a
fault shutdown occurs or STOP is pressed while
in voltage set mode.

I have manual 981-0540 (Issue 23). Adjusting Voltage is on page 10.4.

Alright i'm home now . I've got two manuals 981-0540 and 981-0540b . Do you have either one of those and what page are you on .
Now is the the gen running right ? We have to think about the hz also when change the voltage some generators voltage and hz is controlled by speed of the engine or rpms yours is newer so i have to look at that . On the hz if has a auto governor that keeps it at 60 hz or speed of the engine can determine it .

OK Thanks for the response and I'll check out those links. Background: The gen output is 117V and I know that I need to measure both legs and 240V for completeness, it may be several days before I can do that.

The above voltage would normally be OK but it's unfortunately restricting my Magnum ME 2012 DC amp output. Magnum has confirmed that they made a design/cost tradeoff and the maximum rated amps will only occur when there is 120V at the unit AC input terminals. I've measured the 100A charger output at 80A with 116V AC. Therefore I'd like to increase the gen voltage if possible/practical so that I get the maximum bulk charge when using the gen with less gen run time.

Pushing a button to change the voltage seemed so simple. If changing a locked potentiometer is required as I've read for other models then I'd want to know the procedure before jumping in.

And I do have 3 DVMs one of which is a Fluke.

1st, no insult implied. If you think you are good enough as a mechanic-technician and own a Fluke or equivalent OHM Meter then go for it. Otherwise it's best to go to Cummins and pay the $125/hr.
