Onan 7500 Quiet Diesel shutting down after 5 minutes

I have an Onan7500 Quiet Diesel generator in my 2002 Fleeteood Revolution. More often than not the generator will run for 5 minutes and then stop. It will immediately start back up and run for another 5 minutes and then stop again. Sometimes it will do the same but for 8-10!minutes. Probably unwisely, I’ve done this over and over for an hour or two until it starts and doesn’t stop. At that point I’ve probably had it run all day for hours on end until I hit the stop button. All filters and fluids are changed regularly. The oil level is fine and I've checked it before starting, while running and after it shuts down. The coolant level is fine as well. Any ideas? Has anyone else had/have similar experiences? Not opposed to taking it to an authorized Onan service center to get it fixed as there is one not too far from my house. What I don’t want is getting the run around saying it could be this or that and spending lots of money only to have the problem still exist. Seems like it pulled a code that offered no diagnosis except to take it to in for service. I posted this a few days ago but for some reason the post got closed.
  • Runaround
What weight oil is in the unit?

Safety shutdown oil pressure would be # 1 to diagnose.
  • Sounds like a weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter assuming there are no issues with overheating or fluid levels.

    What was the code?
  • I replaced the fuel filter. That didn’t help. All fluid levels are good. Seems weird to me that it will run perfect for 5 minutes and then shutdown only to fire right back up and run another 5 minutes and then it might run for 12 hours until I turn it off.
  • First-level fault code is a 3 which according to the operators manual indicates shutdown due to some other abnormal condition. The second-level fault code is 24. That code is a coolant temperature sender fault. States controller did not sense temperature change during first 5 MINUTES of operation. Now I know why it shuts down after 5 minutes. Manual states the “corrective action” is to see an authorized Onan dealer. Has anyone had this condition? If so, is it likely to be a sensor, the board, thermostat, etc?
  • It's also possible that it's just the temp sensor or a loose wire or bad ground. Are you able to access the generator and locate the sensor?
