Onan4.0 genset generator

I'm not sure if this is where I would ask this question or not but here goes I have a 27 foot Southwind motorhome Class A and my propane line from my tank to my generator has blown in half the generator runs on liquid not vapor my question is I have a 20 pound cylinder for propane can I just run a line from it to the generator to run my generator I would like to do this without blowing myself up
  • the freezing was caused by the propane being drawn off faster than normal
its not going to hurt anything, but how long did it run
I imagine you only got a few hours out of that 20# cylinder

there are conversion kits for generators to convert from liquid to vapor, i have liquid LP onan 6.2KW,

some people convert their Onans to vapor

I think the main reason for the liquid feed, was too avoid the over chill and LP pressure drop on the tank, cause by running the Onan on vapor
this avoided problems with other LP appliances like the fridge etc..
this is my view, and i might be wrong
  • The calling of the tank wasn't a problem that didn't interrupt anything I just want to make sure it's safe and not going to blow up on me eventually it seemed to run the generator find throughout the whole tank I very much appreciate all of the replies now that I have that fixed maybe I can get the rest of this thing and shape

    No idea if this helps...

... but I remember some threads from years ago where the LPG genset didn't want to run on small tanks. It seemed (at least to me) that the genset ran on vapor and the problem was that the cooling effect you noticed. As the LPG is drawn off QUICKLY (genset uses a lot, relative to an appliance), it cools, and the cooling causes the pressure in the tank to drop to where it doesn't flow as intended.

At least that was the implication of what I read. I think the trailer owner tried a larger LPG tank and it helped.

All this tells me that if cooling of the LPG tank is a problem, the outdoor temperature you're operating in could make a difference. At 90* and you want to run A/C with the genset, your tank might work. At 30* and wanting to run heaters, might not.
  • Thank you for your reply I actually went by Camping World and let them look at what I had and then he told me that it should work so I connected to 20 pound cylinder with a hose too my generator and surprisingly it ran the whole 20-pound tank with no problems without inviting it the only thing I noticed that may have been out of the normal what's the bottom of the tank freezing up with a layer of ice never seen one do that any idea what may have caused that
  • Since you need liquid propane (rather than vapor), you're completely out of luck here. 20 pound propane cylinders are not designed to draw off liquid propane. In theory it might be possible by inverting the cylinder in use, but I think in practice the excess flow safety valves would stop the flow when they're upside down in most cases--and, regardless, it's definitely not how things are designed to operate.
