Power awning question

I have a 2004 Jayco Motorhome with a Carefree One Touch power awning. It has been working intermittently the last few times I used it. It sometimes will fully extend and retract, at other times it will go part way in or out then stop. I let it rest a little while and then it works again. My main question is, will a bad motor work intermittently? I am quite sure it is not the battery or the switch. The reason I say this is because I used a jumper wire hooked to the motor and the chassis battery, and it did the same thing.

I have checked the rails and there is no obvious binding or anything else I can think of. I will replace the motor if necessary, but does it make sense that the motor would work "part time" or not? Any suggestions appreciated.
  • I am thinking it may have a reset switch, for overload, that is getting weaker. After a short time, it resets, and finishes the job.

You could try to contact Carefree and ask them.

Not unless it is built into the motor itself, because the jumper wires I made bypasses everything else. The jumper runs from the truck battery straight to the motor.

I may try calling Carefree as you suggested to see if they can help. I know they no longer make the OneTouch so I may be out of luck. Thanks for your response.
  • IF you connected to the emergency pins at the motor and it did the same thing, then yes, the motor is bad. Yes, motors can operate Intermittantly. You can have a dead spot in the windings. Doug
  • Monaco and CareLess used 14 gauge wiring to my awning and CareLess uses 16 gauge on their relay. The result was 8.5V to the the CareLess motor when retracting. I replaced the wiring to the switch and now have 11.5V and it works as it should. I still have the 14 and 16 gauge wiring from the switch to the motor.
  • OK See that you did the right thing and eliminated everything but the motor and the mechanism.

Thanks Doug. I kinda figured that but wasn't sure about the "part time" motor. Guess now I get to do some research about replacing the motor. Thanks for the info.
