Propane fuel advance?

This has its uses as an emergency generator. It doesn't have to burn fuel (Otto cycle engines lose a lot of energy out the exhaust pipe), nor does it have to convert rotational energy into electricity, so it is a lot more thrifty with propane than an average generator.

If this could be shrunk in size and power by a factor of five, this would revolutionize RV-ing in a lot of ways. Even if a small fuel cell were made that only did 250-500 watts, it would mean no more absorption fridge, and no more discharged batteries after a cold night and using the furnace.
  • Cool idea but looks more like an advertisement. The article doesn't really provide much information other than what was provided by the company. I guess investigative journalism isn't PC.
Is connected to natural gas now the new "living off the grid"?
  • Very true. The article was light on facts. However, I'm just hoping it is a start, so we start seeing propane fuel cells in RVs as a more common option. It won't replace solar, but will allow us to have more 12 volt options. If it could handle 3000-5000 watts, it would replace the generator as well. All for a lot less noise/vibration.
  • There are a number of companies making these fuel cells that work with various fuels. Many of them are working on targeting the home market with units that can produce 3-5kW to replace or supplement power obtained from the grid. Some also produce hot water and hydrogen. You can use the hot water in your home and sometime in the future, use the hydrogen for your new car. They're starting to be big in Japan when a 5kW home unit goes for about $30,000. It looks like they're starting to gain a foothold in Europe as well. Some here in the US are calling for better/bigger Federal Tax Credits to make them more available here. Right now the Tax Credit is for 30% of the total cost but limited to $1,000 per kW.
