Replace Toad Rear Tires With Light Truck Tires?

The toad needs two tires for the rear. The factory size is 195X70X14"

I am going to be carrying about 800 extra pounds of weight. The GVW differential only allows for 400 lbs. The car now has heavy duty rear coil springs.

They don't sell light truck tires down here. Are they available in sizes to replace the aforementioned tires? The wheels are five lug.

Yes, I am putting a big transmission cooler on the car.

If it becomes apparent through responses that the original wheels are questionable I do have access to 1" wider wheels that are obviously more capable of more weight.

Thank you.
  • I'm sure it's not a good idea to mix tires. All 4 tires should be the same design/structure.

    This is from Tirerack's website;

    "As a general rule, tires should not be mixed on any vehicle unless specified as acceptable by the tire or vehicle manufacturer. Drivers should avoid mixing tires with different tread patterns, internal constructions or sizes, and use identical tires on all of their vehicle's wheel positions in order to maintain the best control and stability. Additionally, drivers should never mix winter tires with all-season/summer tires, or mix run-flat tires with non-run-flat tires."
  • Yeah, in the perfect world or Baja racing, you'd want four shoes on the ground all the same. Since this is a toad, handling characteristics aren't that big of a deal. Besides, with 400 over GVWR, you aren't going racing.

    14" availability: AFAIK 14" LT tires are scarce or nonexistent. There are the Euro van/truck tires available in 14" and I know some Forum members have used them with success. If you can, check out online tire vendors/mfg's to get correct fitment with vehicle and also, rim matching. There shouldn't be any huge issues but best to check diameter of tire and rim width before arriving at tire dealer only to find that you need new rims, also.

    I shouldn't have to even say it to an old hand like yourself but spread that load out, fore-aft for the best experience.
  • AS was mentioned not any 14" LT tires left anymore as 14" wheels/tires for the small size trucks went the way of the wind some years ago. Now even our 15" sizes are shrinking down to a couple of sizes.

    Check out the Kumho 857 195R14C or the Maxxis U-168 LT (all position) in a few 14" sizes. Both tires are the euro all position commercial class tire as the C at the end of the tire size designates.

    Do not mix radials and bias ply tires on a car/van/truck/etc where one set steers and the other set follows.
  • The heavy stuff goes in the trunk. AGM batteries, tools, cable, stainless cookware, etc. The light stuff (2" memory foam mattress, clothes, bedding, solar panel) goes on the roof rack. The roof rack is insulated. So the new 25 mile 12-volt electric fence charger gets connected to it.
