Stew47, don’t beat yourself up too much. As I am approaching my mid seventies I am becoming very much aware that as hard as I try, I simply am not as good a driver as I once was. As for the roof, if it is insured I would let the insurance company replace it if they will. That way you can be more sure that the roof will not leak and if it does, there should be some warranty. If it is not insured, a patch should be just fine and likely as weather tight as the original roof. It would just be cosmetic and would make a good conversation starter. It would just be some character marks.
