Once we setup our new Winegard G2 satellite the first time, after that when I connect it it dials itself in an is up and running before I go back into the RV. I don't have to go through a setup on my DirecTV system every time we move.

Chiefneon - jayhardyExplorerDo you have to enter any coordinates in any of these or does it find satellite on there own??

We don't require HD TV and only use SD TV with DirecTV. We recently purchased a new Winegard G2 automatic portable satellite, and we're very pleased with it and it is very easy to set up from the time it came out of the box. The G2 comes from the factory set up for DirecTV. Our old SD DirecTV receiver had no problem conecting with the new Winegard G2 satellite. This satellite can also be roof mounted if you so chose to do so, but you can not mount it o a latter.

Chiefneon - Sandia_ManExplorer IIThere are several portable automatic sat finders for Directv, but we require Directv in HD which none of the portables can do at the present time. There are roof mounted automatic sat finders for obtaining HD content from Directv, but the nearly $2K price tag was more than we wanted to invest.
The solution for us was a simple one since we have been setting up our portable SD Directv sat dish mounted on a stand for many years. Just purchased the same HD sat dish mounted at home on Ebay, and with not much more effort than the SD version can easily acquire sat signal using just a compass and settings from receiver. All the same channels at home and locals too if within our home state.
May do roof-mounted system one day but since we camp often among the pines we need to be able to move our dish to gain access to the southern sky. We carry 150' of coax although 50' is sufficient for most scenarios. Have mastered the routine over the years and with no obstructions to the south we can be up and running in minutes, takes longer for the programming to load to the receiver than it takes to point sat dish. - JiminDenverExplorer IIWe have the tailgater and love it. We have dish but I thought I saw a version that works with direct.
- xaugievikeExplorerHave and love my carry out. I have dish, but I know the carry out works with direct (I had to change the dip switches in mine from direct to dish). Couldn't be easier to use.
- Dutch_12078Explorer IIYes, it does matter that you're using Direct. King Controls and Winegard both make automatic dish models that are useable only with specific Dish receivers. Which Winegard unit do you have now, and what's the problem with it?
On edit: In saying "portable dish finder', are you asking about an auto aiming dish unit? Or a satellite signal strength meter using for aiming a dish...
