Sink drain to tank connection loose and leaking

I have just found that the final 6" length of 1.5" diameter ABS drain pipe from the small sink was loose (and slightly leaking onto the top of the tank) where it fitted into the top of the underneath tank inlet. (Another example of bad construction !) The inlet to the tank is skewed to the side, so that I can't push the tube right down into it from the floor above.

I thought about a smaller diameter tube, but then it has to fit into a 1.5"Diam 90 degree elbow at the other end of it's 6" length, so I don't have a lot of length to play with.

Or dripping glue/sealant down around the sides of the pipe onto the top of the tank ?

Or if I could get pipe that had a screw at on end, I might be able to screw it down more into the tank connection ?

Or......?

The absolute approach is to take the tank out, but the tank has another top connection to the shower at the other end, i.e. I could make double trouble for myself !!

Any suggestion gratefully accepted !! Thanks.
  • DON'T USE SILICONE! you'll be sorry if you do. go to lowes, or home depot, buy ABS cement and a piece of pipe,a coupling, and a union. do the job right you wont be sorry. I had the same thing happen to me while on the road. the yo yo who installed the pipe in the first place didn't use glue. you just have to suck it up. use the braile method if you have to and use plenty of cement, its not likely anybody will see it if it don't leak anymore. If you cant do it yourself pay someone who can. youll be happy if you do.
  • Went to hardware store. Found they did have a 1.5" connection that has a screw thread on the end ! Dry fitted it - looks good. Some I'm going to screw it in as much as possible with loads of silicon caulk around it. See if that works.

You know, sometimes just writing out the problem makes you think of different options ! So, thanks for just being there !
  • Without seeing it, I would try some sort of sealant or tape. I'm guessing it's in a tough to get to location. So you'd have to find a sealant that is liquid but hardens quickly so you could drip it down the pipe. Maybe Gorilla Glue...
