Down here stores sell glass-clear ultra-heavy plastic sheeting about 5-mils thick. Means changing UV degraded sheeting once a year but it's better than changing a panel. Useless against falling 10 pound green coconuts :)

Slingshot is the thing of the past. Today they use BB-guns. More accurate, and you can shoot from farther away. Or a pellet gun.
